Start with the finish
Material and finish are different things. Solid wood describes the construction; a painted, oiled or lacquered surface determines how it should be cleaned. Check the individual product information and the instructions supplied with your piece before applying any cleaner or treatment.
Natural materials have their own character. Grain, tone and markings can vary from piece to piece. Product photographs are a guide to appearance; light and screen settings can also affect how a colour looks.
Everyday cleaning
Use a soft, clean cloth to remove dust. Blot spills promptly instead of rubbing them across the surface. If the supplied instructions permit a slightly damp cloth, follow it with a dry one and avoid leaving water on the furniture.
Do not use abrasive pads, household solvents or silicone sprays unless the care instructions specifically recommend them. Furniture oil and wax are not suitable for every finish. Ask us if you are unsure which treatment belongs on your piece.
Protect the surface
Use coasters beneath drinks and a suitable mat beneath warm dishes. Protect surfaces from sharp objects, plant pots and anything that may trap moisture. Test protective pads for compatibility with the finish and check them from time to time.
Lift objects rather than dragging them. Clean spills under trays or accessories as well as the visible surface. Avoid placing hot cookware directly on furniture.
Choose the right position
Keep indoor furniture away from persistent damp, radiators and other direct heat sources. Strong sunlight can change the appearance of wood and textiles over time. Follow the product guidance on indoor or outdoor use.
Leave enough room to open doors and drawers, and make sure the furniture sits on an appropriate, level surface. Natural materials respond to their surroundings; gradual changes are preferable to extremes of heat or moisture.
Assembly and moving
Follow the instructions and any load limits supplied with the product. Use the specified wall restraints or fixings wherever required, and seek suitable installation help if the wall or fittings are unfamiliar.
Empty drawers and shelves before moving furniture. Lift from suitable structural points with enough help for the weight of the item. Avoid pulling on legs, doors or handles.
