How to Choose a Bedside Table for a Small Bedroom

Choose a bedside table by measuring the space beside your bed, matching the top to a comfortable reaching height and deciding what needs to stay within reach. A compact piece should leave room for everyday movement as well as a lamp and a book.

Measure the usable space, not just the gap

Measure from the bed frame to the nearest wall or piece of furniture, allowing for skirting boards, sockets and curtains. Mark the proposed bedside footprint with paper or tape. Walk past it, open nearby wardrobe doors and check that you can change the bedding comfortably. A narrow table can still be too deep for the route beside your bed. Use the dimensions on the product page rather than estimating size from an interior photograph.

Choose a comfortable height

Measure to the top of your mattress, including any topper. Use that height as a starting point, then test where your hand naturally reaches when sitting or lying in bed. There is no single right bedside height for every bed. Freestanding designs have a fixed overall height; a floating design offers a choice of mounting height, subject to its instructions, wall suitability and safe installation.

Compare width and depth separately

For a compact wall-mounted example, the Forma Petite Floating Bedside with Lower Shelf in Natural measures 30 cm wide, 25 cm deep and 25 cm high. Its height describes the furniture itself, not how high it should sit above the floor. For a freestanding comparison, the Luca Bedside in Chestnut measures 45 cm wide, 35 cm deep and 45 cm high. The larger top takes more floor space but may suit a larger lamp or a different bed height. Check the linked product pages for the selected finish and current details.

Choose storage for what you actually use

Put your usual bedside objects together before choosing a piece: a lamp, water, a phone and a book may be enough. An open shelf keeps a book accessible; a drawer can contain chargers and smaller objects. Allow space in front for a drawer to open. If you use a large lamp base, check its footprint against the usable tabletop rather than assuming that any compact bedside will accommodate it.

Decide whether wall mounting suits your room

A floating bedside leaves the floor below clear, but it still occupies space beside the bed. Before ordering, confirm that the wall and fixing method are suitable and that you have permission to drill where needed. Follow the mounting instructions supplied with the piece; do not assume that fixings suit every wall or infer a load capacity from a photograph. A freestanding bedside is easier to reposition, although any supplied anti-tip instructions still apply.

Check the material and delivery details

Read the material and finish as separate facts. A chestnut or oak-toned finish does not by itself identify the timber underneath. Compare real product photographs as well as the styled room image, and expect natural variation where the piece uses solid wood. Finally, check availability and the delivery estimate for your chosen finish. Keep flexible room plans for backordered or crafted-to-order pieces.
